Saint James Music Academy

Opening its doors to Vancouver's Downtown Eastside in 2007, Saint James Music Academy is a non-profit children's music academy that believes in music for social transformation. After my time at Dossier Creative, I continued on as a Contract Designer. Extending SJMA’s brand identity into their web presence, I design visual assets for web and development through WordPress.

Project Objective

Continuing with the work done at Dossier Creative, the objective for the website refresh is to create an intuitive and emotionally engaging experience that entices community members to explore impactful ways to get involved.

This website was colour contrast tested to comply with Web Content Accessibility Guideline Standards AA 2.0

Creating a Musical Life

Through a commitment to their children’s growth and to their community, SJMA creates a space for their children to musically discover and pursue the joy of creativity, collaboration, and achievement. Using music as an agent of social development, SJMA teaches their children the beauty of music so that music can teach them the beauty of life. Within the Downtown Eastside, SJMA has been a long established non-profit organization pushing for social transformation and generational change.

With the website refresh, my task was to iterate on the previous website design done at Dossier Creative. Based off of the Next After and strategy work, insights that help non-profits reach more people, acquire more donors, and raise more money helped lay the foundation for further elevating SJMA's online experience.

Donors needed to see meaningful ways to contribute, as well as the impact of their donations and clear messaging of SJMA's values, mission, and offerings.

As SJMA's community grows and fosters overtime, I wanted to create a website that can also grow alongside it. I designed and developed it using components that are flexible and easy to edit to withstand the test of time and to remain relevant to their audiences.

Saint James Music Academy

Opening its doors to Vancouver's Downtown Eastside in 2007, Saint James Music Academy is a non-profit children's music academy that believes in music for social transformation. This was a client project I worked on at Railyard Lab for the brand and innovation firm, Dossier Creative.

Project Objective

To refresh Saint James Music Academy's identity by developing an emotionally engaging Brand and Creative Strategy that resonates with, and unifies the students and the community.

Unifying the Students and the Community

When it came to refreshing SJMA’s brand identity, we wanted to recognize their grass roots and celebrate their growing accomplishments. As an organization that builds on the strengths of each other, we needed an identity that not only represented, but also unified the children and the Downtown Eastside.

Sharing the Gift of Music

As the brand strategist, I was tasked to solidify SJMA’s mission and value by collaborating with SJMA. The Verbal Identity including Social Media Guidelines work with the visual identity to represent who they are as a brand and how to communicate across multiple channels. To connect with the community that forms SJMA, the Verbal Identity shares key components that should go into every brand message.
